Leatherback Turtles

 <itunes:author>Deirdre Kennedy</itunes:author>

Pacific leatherback turtles are often called the “dinosaurs of the ocean.” Some people say they’re as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. Little is known about the turtle’s life cycle, except tha they swim thousands of miles across the ocean from their birthplace in Asia to the California coast to munch on the stinging jellyfish that live there. The ancient turtles are extremely endangered. Their number has plummeted over the past fifty years from human activity. On some beaches, people have taken a hundred percent of the turtle eggs for food until some populations have become extinct. Biologist Peter Dutton of the National Marine Fisheries Service has been tracking the female turtles with satellite transmitters. He tells us about the ancient reptile's mysterious life cycle and efforts to protect the remaining individuals.

movie dogs

 <itunes:author>Deirdre Kennedy</itunes:author>

Animals Aloud explores the complex bond between animals and people. In this episode: dogs are getting more TV work than super models these days. Every time you turn on the TV, they're wagging their tails and grinning, advertising everything from floor cleaners to cars. Dogs are getting a lot of voice-over work too apparently. Barking has become part of the typical urban soundscape, along with sirens and car horns. But what are all those dogs really saying to dogs at home? Commentator Anna Cranage Conathan blames irresponsible filmmakers for stirring up a little to much drama in her dog's little brain. She says movie producers should pay more attention to those secret doggie messages or provide "no barking" options on DVDs.

The Lure of Catnip

 <itunes:author>Deirdre Kennedy</itunes:author>

Catnip has long been a useful icebreaker in the human-feline relationship. Its hypnotic powers have made it one of the key ingredients in cat paraphernalia… including toys… cat bedding.. and scratching posts.
It comes in nearly as many different varieties as coffee beans…. With northern climes like Canada and Alaska boasting the highest quality.
The catnip farming and retailing business has become a multi-million dollar industry of its own. While catnip has an intoxicating… some say erotic affect on many cat species from Tigers to tabbies… not all cats succumb.
Cat expert Dr. Arnold Plotnick has some theories on the subject.
He has an exclusive feline-only practice in New York City, called Manhattan Cat Specialists. In fact, he’s the only board certified Cat Expert in the Big Apple and a regular contributor to several cat publications, including Cat Fancy. He filed this commentary about the favorite feline herb.

<itunes:subtitle>This common herb from the mint family affects all feline species from tigers to tabbies. Cat specialist Dr. Arnold Plotnick of Manhattan Cat Specialist explains why catnip transports some to a state of ecstasy and why some cats can take it or leave it. </itunes:subtitle>

An ear infection can turn into a very painful condition at 30 thousand feet. We talk to Dr. Nicolette Zarday about keeping your pets healthy and calm while traveling, either in the car, on a boat or on a plane.
We consider whether you should give them drugs before travelling and how to prevent travel sickness.
